Rebekka is a mother who has recently married into what she thought was a wealthy family. She soon discovers otherwise after her new husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her to care for both her daughters Elvira and Alma, as well as her new stepdaughter, the beautiful and talented Agnes. The family's only hope for salvation is for one of the two daughters to marry into wealth and power. While Elvira dreams of marrying the Prince Julian, Rebekka is aware that her daughter is widely seen as conventionally ugly and has little chance of winning him over, particularly if Agnes were to also compete for his attention. To make her daughter "better" Rebekka chooses to subject her to a series of painful and primitive surgeries, such as a nose job and permanently sewing on new eyelashes. As all of this occurs, it becomes a struggle for Elvira to hold on to her initial innocent excitement of having a stepsister and her crush on Prince Julian, particularly after discovering that his true personality is far from her expectations, and Agnes is willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.
