Cutie and the Boxer

Action-painter and sculptor, Ushio ‘Gyu-chan’ Shinohara came to New York from Japan more than forty years ago to pursue a career as an artist. Despite acclaim, it’s been a long, mostly penniless road, which may have ended in disaster if not for the reluctant devotion of his much-younger wife, Noriko. Though an artist in her own right, Noriko has remained in her husband’s shadow, ‘just an assistant’ in Gyu-chan’s pursuit of his own genius. But as Gyu-chan, now 80, prepares for his latest show in New York’s unforgiving art world, Noriko creates an artistic alter-ego named Cutie, hoping to finally find peace with her husband’s many faults, and her life as Mrs Shinohara. Deservedly nominated for an Oscar, Cutie And The Boxer is a touchingly candid, candy-colored meditation on the realities of making art, love, and life together with another human being, for better or worse.
