10-year-old Laure’s parents move to a new neighbourhood and when she is mistaken for a boy she promptly introduces herself a Michaël and proceeds to inhabit the role - shirtless, playing football, wrestling the boys and kissing the girl. But her new-found freedom is over-shadowed by the looming prospect of school and a girl’s uniform – and the ridicule, humiliation and parental rebuke that must surely follow on discovery. And all further complicated by the fact that she begins to reciprocate Lisa’s feelings. Winner of the 2011 Berlinale Teddy Award, Sciamma’s second feature is a tender exploration of the ambiguities of attraction and gender roles, even in childhood.
