Big Gay Musical, The

It’s a case of life imitating art in this very camp, very buff, totally cruisy musical
set in New York’s West Village.
A troupe are putting on Adam and Steve, Just the Way God Made ‘Em, an Off-Broadway musical rewriting the book of Genesis, showing through comedy, dance and song, that gay is indeed loads of fun. As the show within the movie slowly reveals itself, so its two leads, Paul and Eddie, reveal issues in their lives similar to the play. Eddie is battling with fundamentalist Baptist parents and the spectre of HIV, the very cute Paul can’t find a decent man and so decides to explore the slut within. Life and art coalesce as the pair – and other cast members – explore the realities of identity, love, prejudice and life as out gay men. The film is ribald and fun and very American, the one-liners plentiful and the cast, to a person, gorgeous. See it with a gang and plan your own staged version of a favourite Bible story …
