Hazendal farmhands Pietie, Hope and Rollie are not your typical Western Cape vineyard workers – Hope aspires to winning the local drag queen pageant, Rollie dreams of a husband and Pietie seriously considers retiring as the reigning queen of drag to look after his roses, chickens and doves.
Life is good at Hazendal, but not without its travails, described as the trio discuss, through self-shot video footage, daily challenges and the preparations for the next pageant. It’s clear that Kaapse plaas moffies confront prejudice at every turn – from their own farming communities, from dorpse moffies and the world at large. Yet Roger Thorn’s film manages to find the fabulous in the fraught and offer a portrait of triumph in togetherness rather than loneliness in victimhood.
