The only way he could fit in was to stand out. A witty high school comedy may sound like an oxymoron, but here it is – set in the 1980s, the story of cute 16-year misfit Chance Marquis and his motley crew of friends at Brickland High as they negotiate the minefields of coolness, friends, boyfriends, family and a particularly nasty jock named Brad. To defeat Brad and make it to the battle of the bands, Chance calls on the talents of a extravagant drag queen, a soccer star, and his fellow oddballs - a shy photographer and an intimidating diva-in-training. The film sets itself apart from the recent spate of gay coming-of-age movies by being less about tart and more about heart, with some fine acting by the lead, a clutch-bag full of memorable one-liners and a great 80s soundtrack.
