Officially selected for Cannes in 1983, Angel caused a greater stir than any of the award winners and was seen by one in twenty Greeks at the time of its release. Based on a true story, this gripping, boldly-told tragedy has a secure place in the annals of Gay cinema.
Angelos is a quiet, handsome, poor young Athenian. Before he was called up for national service, his daily life was split between working as a jeweller¹s assistant and shielding his mother and bed-ridden sister from his alcoholic father. Then he meets the Tom-of-Finlandesque hunky, sailor, Mikhalis. Too good to be true, Mikhalis offers Angelos a chance to escape his drudgery and Angelos uses his savings to set up home with him. But Mikhalis betrays Angelos’ devotion and, needing more money, pimps his lover, transforming him into Angel, a transvestite that works the violent Athens streets, until he has the strength to fight back.
