The year is 1879 and the place is the African kingdom of Kuvukiland. During the wedding ritual of Hekule and his queen, Hekule is handed a gemstone by a possessed and dying Indian chef - Kunji Balanadin. The stone is cursed and causes Hekule to become possessed by the spirit of mischief. It is up to sangoma and advisor to the tribe, Bones, to get rid of this troublesome stone to cure his king. But the stone keeps returning, causing Hekule to turn back into Kunji Balanadin at inopportune moments. The king will be shamed, and the future of Kuvukiland uncertain.

Not knowing the origin of the stone, Bones does the only thing he can: he throws his bones, and the Great One transports Bones and Hekule to another world in another time. The world is Durban, the time the present. In a sequence of fish-out-water slapstick adventures, Bones and Hekule are challenged by some of the peculiarities of the modern world, like vans, microlites, fancy dress parties and flush toilets. And, in the midst of this, Hekule keeps transforming into the trouble-making Kunji Balanadin. In this strange world known as “little Bombay”, the two heroes must trace the village that is the stone’s home in order to complete their quest and return to their time.
