Charlie Wilson’s War

Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks) is a Texas congressman with bad habits, but underneath the party-man facade is a man who with an astonishing mind, patriotic and a supporter of the underdog - and in this case in the 1980?s, the underdog is Afghanistan, which has been invaded by the Russians.<br /><br />The anti-communist and wealthy Joanne Herring (Julia Roberts), a friend, patron and on-again-off-again lover of Charlie?s prompts him into doing more for the Afghan freedom fighters, and with the help of his CIA partner, Agent Gust Avrakotos (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the three of them travel the world to form improbable alliances among the Pakistanis, Israelis, Egyptians, arms dealers and law makers, and in succeeding, raise enormous amounts of money to fund covert dealings in Afghanistan to assist these rebels in their war against the Soviets.
