When the struggle for democracy intensified during the 1980s, South African photographers covering the frontlines frequently found themselves targeted by the police, shoulder to shoulder with their civilian comrades. Behind The Lens focuses on eight such veterans who saw themselves as activists first and photojournalists second – accompanied by a breath-taking gallery of their iconic images. Peter Magubane, Rashid Lombard, Zubeida Vallie, Tony Weaver, Paul Weinberg, Gille de Vlieg, Guy Tillim and Benny Gool discuss the days when their cameras became weapons, how they hunted down and captured stories, smuggled their work out into the world, the inevitible risks they took, and whether the struggle is truly over.
